Granite Sculptures

Talbot-Kelly’s Granite Series stems from a pile of granite offcuts salvaged from a construction site in Vancouver’s rapidly developing downtown core. Each assemblage reflects his materially driven approach to design, in which elements are selected from an evolving library of found objects,

material samples, and industrial remnants. The granite blocks function as pedestals, referencing the tradition of classical sculpture through their weight and grounding while elevating the works they support. This gesture creates a tension between the monumentality implied by the stone bases and the commonplace material redundancies that stand upon them.
