Embracing the Utilitarian

Design Curation: Embracing the Utilitarian is a series of propositional objects that explore how alternative modes of designing and production can challenge our culture of excess. Each work represents physical research into how both self imposed and outside limitations dictate possible design outcomes.


The overarching rules that lead this practice are as follows: 


Design with what already exists and is readily available; use found objects, diverted waste or off the shelf components designed for utilitarian applications.


Alter the materials minimally; embrace the narrative of the material’s past or imagined lives.


Design for technical transparency; show how things come together so others can replicate.


Design for disassembly; ensure the pieces can be assembled and disassembled using only a wrench.


These rules are followed as closely as possible. Other parameters are more transient, imposed and followed until no longer necessary, in which case they are bent or abandoned all together. The role of the designer is to choose when to follow or abandon the rules.


The values that inform this practice illustrate a mode of designing that prioritizes resourcefulness and intuition while aiming to evolve the perceived value of objects.

The Sash Series is a celebration of craftsmanship, seamlessly blending traditional joinery techniques with a refined, contemporary aesthetic. At its core, this series features an innovative wood channel system that houses vertically sliding panels, counterbalanced with exposed weights to ensure a smooth, effortless motion.


Drawing inspiration from classic sash window mechanisms, this design pays homage to an age-old technique that is typically concealed within architectural elements. By bringing this elegant functionality to the forefront, the Sash Series transforms a practical mechanism into a striking design feature, elevating both form and function.


Each piece is meticulously crafted from hardwoods, complemented by hand-selected materials, such as glass, stone, and cast brass weights to create a dynamic interplay of texture and materiality. The sash series is offered by Hinterland Design as a made to order piece that can be customized to fit any clients specific needs. The design language and physical framework will remain constant while the materials and dimensions adapted to fit a wide range of applications. Whether used as a bar cabinet, storage unit, or display piece, the Sash Series offers a timeless balance of innovation, tradition, and modern usability.

CONTEMPORARY WASTE is an effort to shift Western cultures material values in order to embrace a more sustainable ‘high-end’ design aesthetic. Investigating a contemporary design aesthetic by combining off cuts, scraps, and end of life materials, with an emphasis on construction and industrial process by-products. Challenging the value we associate with waste materials and function driven design by changing the context in which it’s seen and used.

Slotted is a minimal multidirectional luminaire. Its distinct housing features a linear array of perforations that disperse light through repetition of negative form.


This adaptable design is available in a full collection of archetypes to elevate any space.


Slotted utilizes low voltage dim to warm (1800-3000k) linear LEDs and a frosted light grade acrylic diﬀuser to ensure a smooth consistent splay of light.

seat height 17 1/2"This solid ash desk chair features through tenon joinery, a laminated curved back rest and custom turned dowels throughout. The playful appearance is in part derived from the radiused edges and the fact that it looks overbuilt, using material much thicker than required for a typical dining chair.
